Medical academics suggests payments for body organ donation could help those in debt

A researcher at Dundee University has published an article in a health-related journal arguing that people in debt should be able to get payments for donating organs.
Sue Rabbitt Roff argued that paying for organs like kidneys really should be able to encourage more living donors and might also be a way of helping individuals with their debt problems.
She implies that donors really should be paid £28,000 which will be the average wage in the UK, however the British Medical Association (BMA) says it would not support cash being paid for organs. The Human Tissue Act makes payment for organs illegal and causes it to become an offence to attempt to sell a body organ.
Dr Tony Callard from the BMA’s ethics board said: “Organ donation should be altruistic and based on clinical need. Living kidney donation carries a small but significant health risk.
“Introducing payment could lead to donors feeling compelled to take these risks, contrary to their better judgement, because of their financial situation.”
